August 14-24, Days 137-146
PCT kilometers: 4,171; kilometers hiked: 2,456
Distance to Northern Terminus (Canadian boarder): 99 km
We left Stevens Pass 9 days ago – all of them without internet! Since we're moving on today, we don't have time for a detailed blog; hence this one will be brief.
We reached Stehekin on August 20, a very strenuous hike. The little village ein kleines is on Lake Chelan, Washington's biggest natural lake. Spent a night there; said goodbye to Dan and DJ, who ended their trail there (Washington) a bit sooner than they'd planned. They gave us all of their leftover food! Since the hiker box there was amply filled, we were able to resupply for free, saving us $200.
Next stop was Winthrop on August 22. In the 1970s, the town was completely rebuilt, "Western-style" (Highway 20 was built then). We had to buy a new mug in town because it was apparently chomped on by mice a few nights ago. Also our package of SD cards hadn't reached Stehekin, so we had to figure out where it was. We couldn't pursue that in Stehekin, because we had no Internet. Brief update: The SD cards never turned up, but Amazon immediately refunded the purchase. We'll have to buy some in Vancouver.
Today, August 24, we're back on the trail. We hope to reach Canada in 4 days, which is another 100 km. From there we'll head to Vancouver, where we plan to stay a few days, preparing ourselves for the Sierras.
Addendum on Moneymaker, one of the biggest characters on the PCT (This blog was delayed on account of Sabine's aunt Christa's demise.)
Moneymaker has collected over $140,000 in donations for the Alpha 1 Foundation.
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic disorder passed on from parents to their children. It can result in serious lung and/or liver disease in various age groups.
