78) May 30: Tea and hot chocolate

May 30, day 62, km 930

Distance to Kennedy Meadows, gateway to the Sierra: 200 km

Didn't decamp until after 11:00 am, since we had to update our blog – and didn't know how long we'd have internet. It was pretty hot. After 2 km, we reached highway 58, which the PCT skirts for several kilometers before veering off to the mountains. There the ascent began, climbing from 1,000 to 1,900 meters, spread over about 10 km. We had a fairly long break because it was tiring. After the break, we continued separately, about an hour apart, because Sabine wanted to write a few e-mails. Also, we discovered it's easier to tackle an ascent alone.

Around 5:30 pm Sabine reached the summit, where Olli welcomed her with a cup of tea, while he himself drank a hot chocolate. Before leaving, we met three Belgians, who were delighted to discover Olli speaks Dutch. They only have a month and entered the trail at Tehachapi, possible tackling the sierra if the snow isn't too bad. We hiked until 10:30 pm, completing another 12 km in all. Cowboy camped, and had noodles for dinner again.
