86) June 9: Back on trail

June 9, day 72, km 2,768 to 2,784

Total kilometers: 1,069

Spent half the day updating our blogs (on an idyllic meadow with plashing creek), so didn't break camp till about 3:30 pm. Fantastic weather, slow ascent in the woods. Very pleasant to be away from desert regions for a change!

After the laborious process of getting to Oregon, we hadn't been on the trail for 5 days – our longest interruption to date. Early evening we met two Germans, Andy and Jonas, who have been on the trail just under a month. Because of the heat near Acton, they left the trail and reentered at Ashland, like us. Andy, 28, only has two and a half months, so won't be able to do the entire trail. Jonas, 30, has 6 months. Both work in Germany as social care workers and hail from Warstein in the Sauerland region. We had a nice long interview with them (one hour).

Hiked to mile 10 afterwards. At around 9:15 pm, we found a place to sleep next to a spring, under a huge conifer, with a view of a small pond – frog concert included. Dinner consisted of white beans and kale, fennel and thyme, enriched with salami, cheese, and olives. Dessert was organic curry cashews, cheese, and toffee-almond chocolate "Chocolove and Poem" (William Shakespeare’s sonnet #56 graced the package.)
